Surgical Dehiscence
Following a surgical procedure, it is possible that the incision fails to heal as expected. Sometimes incisions become infected or demonstrate delayed healing. On occasion, part or all of the incision may reopen, and we refer to this as surgical dehiscence.
It is tempting to think of simply re-closing/re-suturing these wounds. Unfortunately, this will often lead to worsening infection and even more delayed healing.
Surgical dehiscence requires an individualized approach to each wound, depending upon its location and the overall health of the patient.
